|In 2016, 6 European organizations from France, Italy, Autria, United Kingdom, Germany and Finland decided to work together to imagine and experiment Medialabs – public spaces in which media and ICTs will be tools for creativity, social and professional inclusion, education and emancipation. During the 2 year-project supported by Erasmus +, the partners Urban Prod, Arci Solidarietà, Cubic, Super Act, Bildungsmarkt and Lasipalatsi Mediacenter decided to compare their work methods and reflect collectively on non formal education, digital technologies, youth employment and social inclusion. Thanks to this collaboration, the 6 partners will be able to create and experiment Medialabs in their own countries. They will share their resources and build together a network with local and European implications.

== The Consortium ==

The consortium carrying the European Medialab Praxis project is composed of 6 partners.

'''Urban Prod - France -'''  is an association that develops digital projects and video productions, in the fields of employment, social inclusion, training and culture. The association has three main activities: mediation/facilitation, training and executive production. Urban Prod inaugurated in October 2015, the Marmedialab in Marseille. Their activities radiate throughout the Provence Alpes Côte d'Azur region. 

'''CUBIC (Cultur Und Bildung In Context) - Autriche -''' is an association involved in issues related to the inclusion and integration of young people on the social and professional level. Their accompaniment includes social work, media literacy, image and digital practices in general. The association has been working on a regional and international scale since its creation in 2005.

'''Supert Act - Royaume Uni -''' is a non-profit association that uses art to serve disadvantaged audiences for a positive social impact from the point of view of health, well-being, employability and inclusion. The association has been active for more than 10 years in the field of social, cultural and digital mediation.

'''Lasipalatsi Media Centre- Finlande -''' is an organism attached to the city of Helsinki and known in Finland for innovation related to new media. Lasipalatsi Media Center experiments the use of ICT as tools for cultural mediation and learning through the KONTUPIST project (participatory platform offering cultural services) and the opening of a medialab in 2015.

'''Bildungsmarkt e.V. - Allemagne -''' the department of EU and pilot projects specializes amongst other fields in the development of quality management and education tools. The structure works on VET and insertion problems. Biidungsmarkt e.V. is optimally cross-linked with companies in Berlin and partners all over Europe.

'''Arci Solidarietà Onlus - Italie -'''  is a non-profit center for the development of community life. Created in 1995, the Center's work supports marginalized people and promotes a culture of solidarity and empowerment, social responsibility against racism and gender discrimination. Arci Solidarietà Onlus is also engaged for the rights of disadvantaged people.

Due to economic difficulties, the British Super Act structure withdrew from the project on October 23, 2017.

== The Manifesto ==
Based on the thinking of the six partner organizations of the European Medialab Praxis project, the EMP Manifesto is a declaration of intention drafted collectively on December 16th 2016 at the first transnational meeting of the European Medialab Praxis project. Originally written in English, the text was translated into each of the languages spoken by the consortium.

* We believe in cooperation, that two together is greater than 1+1. Sharing experiences with other people starts a "snow-ball" effect that leads to an exponential growth of interaction and expression. 

* We believe in a neutral and open environment that represents equality, giving people free access to share ideas on digital communication.

* We share a common understanding that everyone has the potential to have a positive influence on society. This gives endless opportunities to work collaboratively, enabling a positive change for a more sustainable future. 

* We share a common understanding that a medialab using an open door policy, allows the freedom of expression to promote good practices within the community.

* We will promote good practices through the sharing of methods and ideas to propose guidelines and innovations for a forward thinking community. 

* We will explore, discover and comprehend the new digital technology to inspire a change for more positive and active communities.

== The Method ==

=== Phase 1: State of the art - Reflections on popular education, professional inclusion and digital practices ===
The first phase of the project runs from September 2016 to May 2017.

=== Phase 2: Prototyping MediaLabs projects ===
The second phase of the project runs from June to December 2017.

=== Phase 3: European-wide experimentation of citizen MediaLabs ===
The third phase of the project runs from January to June 2018. Each member of the consortium has 6 months to develop the concept of Medialab in his organisation, carry out workshops with young people and evaluate this work through the Medialab framework and the guideline produced during Phase 2.

=== Phase 4: Modeling and spreading ===
The fourth phase of the project runs from July to September 2018. Following the experimental work, the 6 partners will realize a MOOC (Massive Open Online Courses). This is an online training open to everyone. In 6 episodes, it will explain the  modeling and creation steps of a citizen medialab (the first episode written by Urban Prod should be achieved during phase 3 to be broadcast during the last meeting in Finland).

== The meetings ==

The project has four successive phases: researching, prototyping, experimenting and modeling; with continuous documentation allowing knowledge sharing between the partners. Each phase is characterized by a transnational meeting and the creation of several outputs to illustrate the results of the meeting.

=== Meeting 1: Launch of the European Medialab Praxis project === 

The first transnational meeting organized by Urban Prod took place in France from the 14th to the 17th December 2016. It brought together experts, academics, young people, partners and professionals from the social and economic sector. The 6 organisations were able to define a working methodology and a common editorial line that are at the base of all the innovation work done during the project. This time of collective reflection allowed us to devote ourselves to a more detailed study of the stakes of the digital revolution, of our information society and the societal issues that ensue from it. At the end of this first meeting, three outputs were created: a manifesto, a semantic dictionary, a Tumblr and a Wiki.

=== Meeting 2: Creation of Prototyping Tools for Medialabs Projects ===

The second transnational meeting organized by CUBIC took place from the 6th to 10th June 2017 in Austria. It was an opportunity to review the state of the art and the outputs created during the phase 1. A time of reflection on the professional inclusion of young people through digital technologies led to the creation of the third and fourth outputs: an evaluation grid of the digital skills needed in a Medialab to promote the professional inclusion of young people as well as a guideline for the creation of a Medialab.

=== Meeting 3: Exchange of Practices ===

The third transnational meeting organized by Bildungsmärt will be held in Germany in February 2018. It will bring together the partners who will exchange the best practices they experimented in their territories. A critical feedback will help the evolution of the tools created according to the results. Each partner will rely on photos, texts and audiovisual content produced during the experimentation time.

=== Meeting 4 : Spreading ===

The fourth and final transnational meeting organized by Lasipalatsi Ltd will be held in Finland in July 2018. Its purpose is to disseminate the results of the experiment.

== The Trainings ==

=== Collective brainstorming cycle: popular education, digital transition and employability of young people ===

In non formal education, educational praxis can be understood as "the work of culture in social and political transformation". This approach was studied through a cycle of collective reflections, "EMP Night School", which took place from the 14th to 16th December 2017 at the Marsmedialab of Urban Prod in Marseille. This training, which included time for communication, debate and audiovisual practice, was an opportunity to meet young people (18-30 years old), academics, associations, entrepreneurs and institutions, to discuss projects and present centers for educational innovations. 
The following initiatives have been presented.
* Medialab Prado : citizen laboratory created in 2000 and working on the production, research and dissemination of cultural projects. Presented by Raphaël Besson, PHD in Territorial Sciences and Urban Planning. [[Medialab Prado (fr)|Watch the video]].
* Le LABØ : Incubator of innovative projects. Presented by Marthe Pommié, Director of the modernisation platform of the prefecture Bouches-du-Rhône. [[LABØ (fr)|Watch the video]].
* La Fabrique des écritures innovantes en sciences sociales : a place of creation and research in Social Sciences, to think and produce new narrative forms. === Training of trainers to the use of the MOOC ===

Two people per association (ideally a young person and a companion) will be trained to be able to accompany other young people in the discovery of the MOOC. They will learn to convey the basic skills related to the issues of a Medialab and the use of the various tools that can be found in a MOOC (forum, exercises, quizzes, courses ...).
